Continuing the success of The 1st Tomohon International Choir Competition on 22 – 25 June 2009, The 2nd TICC will be held soon on 18 – 21 August 2010 in Tomohon, North Sulawesi, Indonesia.

This international choir competition in Tomohon is again organized as the commitment of Government City of Tomohon in building up Tomohon City as beautiful City of Culture , also to settle many things have been developed and achieved in the first competition. Choir competition is a cultural event, a spiritual event as well.

This is due to the numerous choirs in North Sulawesi and especially in Tomohon, which is mostly root in churches. This annual international choir competition will place Tomohon as one of culture and choral centre in the world. Government City of Tomohon is proudly present this event.

After the success of the first competition on last 22 – 25 June 2009, I am pleased to invite you to participate (again) in the 2nd Tomohon International Choir Competition (2nd TICC) to take place on 18 – 21 August 2010. Tomohon is a unique location for choral and vocal music and is therefore the natural location for a competition of international significance. Holding a competition here shows that we have not only the musical culture to support it, but also the administrative and political infrastructure to make the dream a reality.

This competition is only possible with the support of the mayor and the leadership of Tommyanto Kandisaputra, the brilliant conductor of the Studio Cantorum and his dedicated team of staff and volunteers. As part of the Tomohon Flower Festival, TICC will be integral to building international friendships and cultural exchanges.

The 2nd TICC invites outstanding choirs from various parts of Indonesia and international choirs elsewhere to participate and to be adjudicated by an international jury. I know that you will have an uplifting and memorable experience, and on behalf of 2nd TICC and the international choral community, I hope to welcome you to beautiful Tomohon.

The 2nd Tomohon International Choir Competition is to be considered in 10 categories:

1. CHILDREN CHOIR (Ages 13 and below, Min.20 singers)

2. YOUTH CHOIR (Ages 12 – 18, Min. 20 singers)

3. MIXED CHOIR (Ages 18 and up, Min. 20 singers)

4. MALE CHOIR (Ages 18 and up, Min. 20 singers)

5. FEMALE CHOIR (Ages 18 and up, Min. 20 singers)

6. SENIOR MIXED CHOIR (Ages 45 and up, Min. 20 singers)

Description:

Basic information for categories 1 – 6

• Categories 1 – 6 are designed to give each choir the chance to compete with choirs of similar size and scope.
• Whole song performance with the choreography should be well prepared.
• For categories 1 & 2, the character and degree of difficulty of the programs should be age-appropriate.
• Programs should consist of 2 (two) piece of the choir’s own choice that can show the best artistic level from the choir and contrast between the 2 (two) songs, and not reduction from orchestral pieces.
• A minimum of one pieces to be sung a cappella
• The total singing time for the program must not exceed 10 minutes.

7. MUSICA SACRA (No age limit, min. 20 singers)

Description:

• This category focuses on Christian sacred choral music from past and present.
• Programs should consist of at least:
  • One piece of sacred music by a composer born before 1807
  • One piece of sacred music by a composer born after 1807
• A minimum of one of the pieces to be sung a cappella
• The total singing time for the program must not exceed 10 minutes.

8. GOSPEL & SPIRITUAL (No age limit)

Description:

• Programs should consist of 2 (two) pieces representing the traditional gospel & spiritual repertoire.
• At least one piece must be sung a cappella.
• The total singing time for the program must not exceed 10 minutes.

9. POP & JAZZ (No age limit)

Description:

• Programs should consist of 2 (two) pieces in a Pop & Jazz style.
• The organizer will provided Electric Piano ONLY.
• The total singing time for the program must not exceed 10 minutes.

10.  FOLKLORE & TRADITIONAL (No age limit)

Description:

• Programs should represent musical traditions of the choir’s own country.
• Programs may consist of any number of pieces.
• The total singing time for the program must not exceed 10 minutes.

1. All amateur choirs and their members from around the world are invited to participate. Singers, however, must be amateur, i.e. not earn their living by singing.

2. Participants are encouraged to carefully read and understand the guidelines set forth for each category as they will be strictly enforced.

3. Each choir may participate in a maximum of 3 (three) categories.

• Categories 1 – 6 Choirs may generally participate in only one of these categories.

• Categories 7 – 10 In these categories, multiple participation is possible regardless of registration for categories 1 – 10.

4. If a choir takes part in several categories, no competition pieces may be repeated.

5. The number of singers on stage must correspond exactly to the number of singers who paid the Participation Fee. Any choir not in compliance will be disqualified without refund of fees.

6. All competition pieces are subject to approval by the Artistic Committee.

7. The competition will only provide an electric piano. Any other instrumental accompaniment must be supplied by choirs and written notification must be sent to the organizer no later than one week before the competition. A cappella pieces may use a maximum of three un-pitched instruments, with the exception of those in the FOLKLORE & TRADITIONAL category for which there is no limit.

8. Only live accompaniment is allowed. The use of any pre-recorded audio is strictly prohibited.

9. ‘Total singing time’ is the duration of the performance excluding entrance and exit from the stage.

10. Participants should send 5 (five) copies of each piece in their proposed repertoire (in standard, five-line, staff notation). One copy will remain with the committee for archiving, while the remaining copies can be collected from the committee on the closing day. Uncollected scores will not be returned.

11. Change of performance key and song order must be announced in writing to the Artistic Committee not later than one week before the competition. Afterward, no changes are permitted.

12. Usage of amplification (for voices or instruments) is NOT PERMITTED.

13. No sound and stage checks are allowed prior to the competition.

4. Payment Regulations

• Registration Fee must be paid before 31 March 2010
• A deposit of 50% of the Participation Package must be paid by 30 April 2010
• The balance of payment must be paid no later than 31 May 2010
• There will be no refund of the Registration Fee or Participation Package for any cancellation or disqualification.

1.  Jurors consist of a range of experienced, international choral figures.
2.  Each piece of every performance will be evaluated by the following criteria:

A.  Technical Evaluation

- Intonation

- Sound quality

B.  Artistic Evaluation

- Fidelity to the score

- Overall artistic impression

3.  The final result is determined by totaling the final scores of all jurors.
4.  Decisions of the adjudicators are final and no further correspondence or negotiation shall be entertained.

If an actual performance exceeds the limit of allocated total singing time as set of the category, the choir’s score will be reduced by five-percent (5%) for every 15 seconds beyond the time limit.

Director of Operations for the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, she was a singer and co-director with Eskil Hemberg in the Stockholm Academic Choir and main director for the Stockholm Academic Choir. Working regularly as a conductor with a special interest in children’s choirs.

Tommyanto Kandisaputra – Indonesia

Founder and President of Bandung Choral Society. Founder, Coductor and Artistic Director of Studio Cantorum Choir and Orchestra. Chairman of INTERKULTUR Indonesia. Choral Clinician, Speaker and adjudicator. Artistic Advisor of Church Choral Symposium in Indonesia,  2003, 2005, 2007.

Jamie Hillman – Boston USA

A multi-faceted musician who has won awards as a singer, pianist, composer, and conductor. He holds a Performer’s Diploma (Piano Performance) from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, the Bachelor of Music degree (Honors Music Education) from the University of Western Ontario, and the Master of Music degree (Choral Conducting) from the University of Illinois. Hillman is currently pursuing a doctorate at Boston University, where in addition to his studies, works as a research assistant to Professor André de Quadros and teaches in the Composition and Theory Department.

Before moving to Boston, Hillman served as Lecturer in Voice at Prairie Bible College in Alberta, Canada, where he taught voice, vocal pedagogy, and conducted both the women’s choir and the Masterworks Chorale & Orchestra.

Jennifer THAM, Singapore

Jennifer conducts the SYC Ensemble Singers, and is Artistic Director of the Young Musicians’ Society.  She is a Board member of the International Federation for Choral Music, and represents Singapore on the World Choir Council.  She has been on competition juries in Austria, Germany, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, China and Indonesia and will be on jury at the 6^th World Choir Games (Shaoxing, China).

Bo Nilsson – Sweden

Received his pedagogical, vocal and operatic training in his native Sweden, receiving his degree in vocal pedagogy from the Stockholm University College of Music Education, Bo’s singing experience with choirs is extensive. He was a founding member of the Stockholm Consort, a double quartet specializing in early music (principally Bach motets); member of the Stockholm Bach Choir; and other various Stockholm choirs since 1975.

As Concert Manager for Concerts Sweden, he organizes tours, competitions, festivals and conferences for many choirs and vocal ensembles: Swedish Radio Choir, Eric Ericson Chamber Choir, Carmina Slovenica, Neue Vokalsolisten Stuttgart, Voces Nordicae, etc.

In the summer of 2009, Bo Nilsson formed an experimental vocal group, “Spitz, the choir improvisers” aspiring to take choral performance to a higher level of musical expression. The result is exciting performances as well as inspirational workshops and seminars for conductors, singers and composers throughout Sweden. His choral and vocal expertize and playful personality lends itself to this innovative way of enhancing the choral experience.

Upon totaling of the jury’s individual scores, choirs will be awarded according to their final score:

Silver Medal : 60,01 – 80,00

The GOLD Medal winning choir with the highest score in each category will be awarded: “Category Winner” and will be presented a trophy, certificate and Category Winner Prize Rp. 10.000.000,- (Ten million rupiahs) and will perform in the Grand Prix Competition.

The Grand Prix Competition

All Category Winner may take part in the “Grand Prix Competition”. Each choir should prepare two (2) pieces to be selected freely by the conductor and with approval of the Artistic Committee. total singing time must not exceed 10 (ten) minutes.

Special Jury Award

The jury may award special prizes for outstanding artistic achievements.

Outstanding Conductor Award

The conductor with the most outstanding performance may be awarded the Outstanding Conductor Award at the discretion of the jury. This award will not be given in every category and will be given solely at the discretion of the jury.

2.  Registration Documents

The following documents must be provided by the closing date:

• A completed registration form (organizational data)
• Receipt of the Registration Fee & Participation Package with “purpose of payment” listed as “T10 – FULL NAME of your choir”
• 5 copies of each score from the proposed repertoire
• Audio recording (CD or cassette) of the participating choir with date of recording indicated. The recording should be recorded with the last two years.
• A short biography of the choir on CD in MS-Word format (.doc)
• A photograph of the choir in a form suitable for reproduction: minimum 12 x 7.5 cm and a minimum of 300 dpi for digital images. Submit digital copies on CD in jpeg, jpg format, and should be received by committee max. on 31 May 2010, afterwards the photograph will not be published on the program book.
• Please label all recordings, photographs, and other material with the choir’s name.
• Choirs choosing to compete in more than one category should submit separate form A2 for each category.
